In spring Gulmarg lives upto its name which means Meadow of flowers, its a large upland meadow 52kms southwest of Srinagar. Come winter, Gulmarg is Indias major ski resort.
Originally called ‘Gaurimarg’ by shepherds, its present name was given in the 16th century by Sultan Yusuf Shah, who was inspired by the sight of its grassy slopes emblazoned with wild flowers. Today Gulmarg is not merely a mountain resort of exceptional beauty- it also has the highest green golf course in the world, at an altitude of 2,650 m, and is the country’s premier ski resort in the winter.

Things to do and see

In winter there's skiing and sledging(man pulled). Theer are ski runs to suit all levels of experience and the meadow provides plenty of gentle slopes for beginners. Three poma lifts,one chairlift and the Gondola cable car provide access to three major ski runs. The skiing season is from 15 December to 15 April and an equipment hire shop near Gondola bottom station hires out all the gear for Rs 300 a day. You can also get decent accomodation in Gulmarg at resonable price.
